Today's Read Aloud was this book by Julie Lawson. Check this link to read a review that may give you more ideas for lessons that connect to the story. I am now particularly interested in using this book as a cornerstone for an outdoor life and adventure theme. It was even more fun to share this book today because I had a wonderful fishing experience at Purden Lake on Sunday. Listening or "reading" a little deeper, what meaning did you find in the story to apply to Art or to Life?

Just as a side note... Julie Lawson taught at my elementary school, grade 5! A lot of her books are set in my hometown, or versions of it anyways.
I can see how you would get choked up with the memories attached to the beautiful inscription in your book. I was quite moved by what the mother wrote myself and I don't have a personal connection to the family.
I thought the story was simply beautiful. In life, there are so many emotions that we experience as individuals, some of triumph, others of failure. I loved the overall message behind the story, that even when we don't succeed, often something even more beautiful and amazing comes out of the experience. I don't know how many times I have connected to the main character, but I never let the feeling of sadness get in the way of trying again next time, or helping someone achieve his/her goal, like the protagonist did for her brother.
ps. I finally went camping this summer and experienced fishing for the first time (with the guidance of my significant other). It was a truly wonderful experience! :)
Thanks for these comments. How cool that Julie has had a chance to know such a creative teacher! I appreciate Christen's empathy and Rebecca's connections. It is rewarding when others also value the experiences and messages that have meant a lot to you!
